Mettler-Toledo unveils advanced bulk flow X-Ray series to boost safety

Mettler-Toledo Product Inspection has launched the X3 Series, a new range of bulk flow x-ray inspection systems designed to address the challenges faced by manufacturers of loose products, particularly in the dried fruit and confectionery sectors.
The new series, consisting of the X13 and X53 models, aims to deliver class-leading physical contamination detection while simultaneously minimising product waste and simplifying operation for high-speed lines.
Developed specifically for unpackaged products moving on conveyors, the X3 Series handles throughput rates of up to 5,000 kg/hour. The systems are capable of detecting contaminants as small as 0.3 – 0.4 mm, including metal, glass, stone, and calcified bone.
For producers of dried fruits, nuts, cereals, and confectionery, this level of precision is critical not only for consumer safety but for protecting downstream processing equipment from damage.
The X3 Series offers flexibility based on the complexity of the product being inspected:
- The X13 (cost-effective precision): equipped with HiGain+ detector technology and ContamPlus software, the X13 provides a gateway to advanced inspection. It delivers sharp imaging for standard bulk applications, ensuring reliable detection of physical contaminants regardless of product format.
- The X53 (dual-energy advanced discrimination): designed for challenging applications, the X53 utilises HiGain+ DE (Dual Energy) technology. By processing two energy spectrums simultaneously, the system can differentiate between materials with similar densities — such as distinguishing a stone from a dense nut or dried fruit piece. This allows for the detection of low-density contaminants that single-energy systems might miss.
A key focus of the X3 design is the reduction of false rejects and product waste. Manufacturers can choose between distinct reject mechanisms suited to their product size:
- 30-nozzle air blast: for pinpoint removal of contaminants in smaller products.
- 6-flap pusher: for larger produce.
Crucially, these reject devices are positioned above the product. This design choice prevents the mechanism from becoming blocked or clogged with sticky or sugary debris — a common issue in confectionery processing — thereby maintaining performance and hygiene.
The systems also feature a hygienic design with an optional IP69 rating. Tool-free removal of belts and guides, along with front-open conveyor access, simplifies cleaning routines and reduces downtime in sanitary environments.
To support modern regulatory requirements, the X3 Series offers full connectivity to ProdX, Mettler-Toledo’s data management software. This enables real-time monitoring, automated reporting, and secure data storage, facilitating full traceability for food safety audits.
“The launch of the X3 Series is a major milestone for bulk flow inspection,” said Chris Plant, head of sales X-ray Inspection at Mettler-Toledo Safeline X-ray. “With the X13 and X53, we are combining exceptional detection capabilities with hygienic design and versatile reject options that significantly reduce waste. From agricultural produce to confectionery, the X3 Series enables manufacturers to protect equipment, reduce costs and build consumer trust, while simplifying compliance in an increasingly demanding regulatory environment.”
