In a major win for sustainable food packaging, global packaging leader Amcor and French dairy cooperative Laïta have been jointly recognised at the 2025 Zero Impact Packaging Trophies.

The partners were awarded in the ‘flexible – complex packaging’ category for developing an innovative cheese packaging solution that delivers a remarkable 63% reduction in carbon footprint.

The award-winning packaging will be used for Laïta’s flagship product, the Paysan Breton Emmental Cheese in blocks. The core innovation is the switch to Amcor’s AmPrima PP film in the Easy Pack format, replacing a previous multi-material structure made with three different types of plastic that was not recyclable.

The new AmPrima PP film adopts a mono-material, polypropylene (PP)-based structure, making it mostly recyclable within the flexible-film recycling stream. This aligns with guidelines set by French bodies COTREP and the CITEO Tree Tool, anticipating the recycling infrastructure expected to be operational in France from 2026.

This development is directly motivated by strategic environmental and regulatory goals. The new film delivers a 63% carbon footprint reduction compared to the prior structure, and also achieves a 6% plastic weight reduction, which simultaneously lowers material use and helps reduce Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) fees. “This project… enabled us to reduce the use of plastic and switch to packaging that is designed for recycling, in line with the requirements of the new European PPWR regulation,” explained Mathieu Boulc’h, packaging manager at Laïta.

This regulation will require manufacturers to have 100% of their packaging designed for recycling by 2030.

Critically for food producers, the switch to the mono-material film involves no compromise on performance. The AmPrima PP film is fully compatible with existing cheese packaging equipment and maintains all the original benefits of the Easy Pack format, including essential product features such as shelf life, sealing integrity, line efficiency, and consumer convenience.

Laura Delapeyronnie, marketing manager dairy for Amcor, commented: “This collaboration with Laïta and the Paysan Breton brand is a great example of how brands can make meaningful progress toward more sustainable packaging with no compromise for their customers. By addressing the growing expectations of consumers while maintaining packaging performance, this project shows how innovation and responsibility can go hand in hand.”

This win demonstrates a successful blueprint for food manufacturers looking to drastically cut their environmental impact while meeting the tightening requirements of European packaging legislation.
