Hive Mind reimagines Norse tradition for a new generation

As the UK’s “mead-aissance” gathers pace, Hive Mind Mead & Brew Co. has fired a fresh shot across the bow of the traditional fruit cider market.

This February, the craft producer unveils its Dark Cherry Traditional Mead, a 12.5% ABV melomel designed to capture a demographic increasingly disillusioned with the synthetic sweetness of mass-market alternatives.

The launch comes as the UK mead category surges to a valuation of £11.6 million, following a trajectory set by the North American market, which has exploded into a £650 million powerhouse.

For decades, fruity ciders served as the entry-point for younger drinkers. However, Hive Mind co-founder Kit Newell argues that tastes are maturing toward complexity and provenance.

“The momentum shift has come courtesy of younger drinkers moving away from overly sweet, synthetic fruit ciders and unremarkable generic wines,” said Newell. “They are moving towards small-batch, crafted drinks offering authenticity, provenance, and clear environmental upsides.”

The Dark Cherry Mead — inspired by the Norse tradition of infusing honey wine with foraged berries — offers a tart, balanced finish that stands in stark contrast to the sugar-heavy profiles of industrial fruit beverages.

Beyond the flavour profile, Hive Mind is banking on the “pollinator effect.” Unlike grain-based spirits or grape-based wines, mead production is inextricably linked to the health of the British countryside.
