Innovia Films’ P2G high-performance recyclable film slashes waste

Innovia Films has announced a major step forward in sustainable agriculture packaging with the launch of P2G, a high-gas-transmission BOPP (Biaxially Oriented Polypropylene) film.
Specifically engineered for the flow-wrap packaging of fresh produce and pre-prepared vegetables, the new film promises to marry high-speed industrial performance with the rigorous recycling standards of the upcoming EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR).
The primary challenge in vegetable packaging is “respiration control.” Pre-prepared greens and vegetables continue to “breathe” after being packed; if the gas transmission is poorly managed, the product wilts or spoils prematurely.
P2G solves this by optimising gas transmission rates to enhance shelf life. By extending the window of freshness, the film directly reduces food waste — one of the most effective ways to lower the overall carbon footprint of the food supply chain.
Designed for the demanding “field-to-fork” journey, P2G offers several technical advantages for packers:
- Dual-side heat sealability: ensures secure, consistent sealing on high-speed flow-wrap lines.
- Optical clarity: high-gloss transparency ensures produce remains attractive and visible to consumers.
- Low-temperature resilience: the film maintains puncture and impact resistance even in chilled storage and fluctuating climatic conditions, reducing “leakers” and transit damage.
With the EU’s PPWR set to enter into force in 2025, the industry is under pressure to move toward mono-material solutions. P2G is a mono-material polypropylene, making it fully recyclable within existing PP waste streams.
“P2G represents the next generation of fresh produce packaging,” explains Megan Hinkley, senior product manager – packaging at Innovia Films. “It combines functionality, reliability, and sustainability to meet the evolving needs of retailers and packers while supporting the transition to circular packaging.”
To further help brand owners hit recycled content targets without compromising food safety or film strength, P2G can incorporate chemically recycled and bio-sourced ISCC-certified polymers via a mass balance approach. This allows manufacturers to reduce their dependence on fossil-based resources while maintaining the high-performance standards required for fresh food contact.
