Domino Printing Sciences (Domino) has expanded its secondary packaging portfolio with the launch of the Cx150i, a high-resolution piezo inkjet printer designed to offer food and beverage manufacturing businesses a more sustainable and cost-effective alternative to traditional labelling.

The Cx150i is engineered specifically for coding onto porous surfaces like cardboard boxes. At the heart of the new system is a commitment to environmental responsibility, utilising a non-toxic, non-hazardous vegetable-oil-based ink that enhances the recyclability of secondary packaging while reducing the manufacturer’s overall chemical footprint.

By printing directly onto the box, the Cx150i allows manufacturers to eliminate the need for adhesive labels, silicone-coated backing liners, and the energy required for traditional labelling equipment. This direct-to-box approach significantly reduces waste and simplifies the supply chain by removing the need to manage various label stocks.

“The Cx150i represents a hugely capable direct-to-box printer at an accessible price,” says David Edwards, product manager – piezo inkjet at Domino Printing Sciences. “It offers significant cost-of-ownership savings when compared to labelling solutions and boasts strong environmental credentials: vegetable-oil–based ink, minimal waste, and no factory air.”

Designed for facilities where floor space is at a premium, the Cx150i features a compact footprint and an intuitive interface aimed at operational simplicity. Key technical highlights include:

  • Reduced TCO: lower maintenance requirements and improved ink efficiency compared to older inkjet systems and mechanical labelling solutions.
  • Advanced integration: the system connects seamlessly with factory MES and ERP systems via Domino Automation.
  • Remote optimisation: through Domino Cloud, operators gain remote monitoring capabilities and improved visibility into overall equipment effectiveness (OEE).
  • Quality assurance: the printer can be paired with Domino’s R-Series vision solutions for automated print inspection and error reduction.

The launch targets a critical gap in the market for SME manufacturers who require industrial-grade reliability and high-resolution coding — essential for barcodes and traceability — without the high capital expenditure typically associated with large-scale primary packaging equipment.
