Sealed Air’s PrimeVac film redefines hygiene and throughput

Sealed Air is transforming food packaging from a standalone material choice into a primary engine for production throughput with the launch of its Cryovac Shrinkable Rollstock PrimeVac.

Designed to operate as part of a fully integrated system alongside Flow-Vac loading technology and Cryovac vacuum chamber machines, the solution addresses the mounting pressures of labour shortages, rising operational costs, and tightening sustainability regulations currently facing food processors.

Central to this optimisation is the PrimeVac material itself — a 40-micron, dust-free, permeable film featuring an EVOH barrier. Unlike traditional approaches where materials and machinery are sourced in isolation, this system-level integration ensures that the film behaves predictably on automated lines.

By aligning film performance with mechanical loading and vacuum sealing, processors can achieve a more stable throughput and consistent packaging quality, which are vital for maintaining efficiency in high-volume, high-scale production environments.

The technical shift toward an integrated approach also offers significant advantages for operational stability and material efficiency. In manufacturing sites where manual intervention is becoming increasingly difficult due to labour availability, the PrimeVac system reduces the interruptions and downtime often associated with start-stop events.

Furthermore, as Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) regulations begin to link packaging volume directly to costs, the system’s ability to maximise material performance and minimise waste provides a measurable path toward both cost control and sustainability targets.

Beyond efficiency, the PrimeVac solution enhances production hygiene and food safety. The film is produced using a powder-free process, which supports cleaner production conditions and reduces the frequency of machine cleaning. By eliminating powders — a potential source of contamination — and combining this with high barrier properties and superior sealing performance, Sealed Air aims to deliver a packaging outcome where integrity and safety are guaranteed at every stage of the automated line.

Ultimately, the company is moving the industry toward a model where packaging performance is measured by its total impact on the production lifecycle rather than the properties of the film alone.
