The metal packaging sector is signalling confidence, investment appetite and long‑term stability as Metpack 2029 locks in more than 80% of its exhibition space three years ahead of opening day.

Following a record‑breaking 2026 edition — defined by surging visitor numbers, expanded exhibitor participation and a larger footprint — the world’s leading trade fair for metal packaging is preparing for its next chapter with a refreshed hall layout and an even more ambitious scale.

From 12–15 June 2029, Metpack will move into Halls 5, 6, 7 and 8 at Messe Essen, marking the first time the event has occupied this eastern section of the venue. The shift is part of an expansion designed to accommodate the industry’s growing technological complexity, machinery requirements and globalised supply chain activity.

A record‑breaking 2026 sets the pace for 2029

The 2026 edition delivered standout metrics that underscore Metpack’s role as the sector’s premier investment and innovation platform:

  • 89% of visitors identified Metpack as the industry meeting place
  • 87% viewed it as a key innovation platform
  • 83% of exhibitors affirmed its strong reputation
  • 85.5% of exhibitors and 81% of visitors came from abroad
  • 88% of visitors held purchasing or procurement authority
  • Average order values reached €750,000, surpassing previous cycles

These figures paint a picture of a commercially drive global trade fair where deals were signed, machinery was evaluated, and investment decisions were accelerated — conditions that have directly influenced the rapid rebooking for 2029.

Oliver P. Kuhrt, CEO of Messe Essen, captured the sentiment succinctly: “Metpack is the place where the entire international metal packaging industry comes together… focused, investment‑driven and recognised worldwide.”

His assessment is reflected in the early commitment from exhibitors, who have secured the majority of available space well ahead of schedule.

New hall layout unlocks space for growth

The move to Halls 5–8 introduces a modernised visitor flow and a more technically capable environment. The glass foyer will serve as a central gateway, offering improved access and visibility for exhibitors showcasing large‑scale machinery and advanced production technologies.

The new halls provide higher ceilings and improved logistics routes for machinery installation, enhanced natural light for better product presentation, core efficient movement of goods for international exhibitors and greater flexibility for complex stand builds.

Christina Kleinpaß, Metpack’s project manager, emphasised that the redesign is about future‑proofing: “We are laying the foundations for further growth and giving Metpack the space it needs as the leading investment and technology trade fair for the metal packaging industry.”

Innovation formats return stronger

Two key elements from 2026 will return:

  1. Tuesday–Friday event schedule The compact format proved highly effective for international travel planning and business meetings, and will be retained for 2029.
  2. ‘Talk in a Can’ forum Introduced in 2026, the forum will be expanded to deliver deeper market insights, expert commentary, product showcases and networking opportunities. Its evolution reinforces Metpack’s positioning as both a commercial and knowledge‑driven platform.

A sector ready to invest

Metal packaging continues to benefit from strong demand across food, beverage, aerosol and industrial segments, supported by sustainability credentials, recyclability and regulatory alignment. As companies invest in next‑generation machinery, automation and material innovation, Metpack remains the central stage where these decisions are shaped.

With its refreshed layout, expanded capacity and proven international pull, Metpack 2029 is set to build on the momentum of its record‑breaking predecessor — cementing its role as the global hub for metal packaging technology, strategy and investment.
