A new era for UK dairy: uniting for a more resilient and sustainable future

Bas Padberg, chair of The Dairy Roadmap.
As the climate emergency intensifies and food systems around the world face mounting pressure, the UK dairy industry stands at a pivotal crossroads. Dairy is essential to national nutrition and rural economies, however rising consumer expectations, regulatory scrutiny, and the realities of climate change demand more than incremental change. They call for bold, united action.
That’s why the latest evolution of The Dairy Roadmap marks a true turning point: for the first time, the entire value chain – from farmers and processors to retailers and foodservice partners – will unite under a single governance structure to deliver measurable, industry-wide environmental progress, sharing accountability as one.
The Dairy Roadmap has long been recognised as one of the UK’s most respected food-industry sustainability initiatives. First launching as The Milk Roadmap in 2008, led by AHDB, Dairy UK, and the NFU, it has consistently demonstrated that collaboration across the supply chain can drive real environmental change and deliver impressive achievements by dairy processors on water, energy and waste production. Today it remains a global benchmark for leadership in sustainable dairy production.
The ambition remains the same: to reduce the environmental footprint of dairy, champion innovation and best practice, and contribute to the UK’s net-zero targets, supporting the global effort to limit temperature rise to 1.5°C.
This next phase brings farmers, processors and industry organisations into direct, structured, egalitarian partnership with leading retailers, wholesalers, and foodservice partners to agree a shared pathway for the future. Collaborating across the industry, and with retailers and foodservice partners, demonstrates the seriousness of our commitment, to create a more resilient and sustainable future for our food.
A new Dairy Roadmap Steering Group will guide this work, representing every part of the value chain with an equal voice. It is a true UK first – and a powerful moment for an industry that not only delivers essential nutrition to a growing population but that also carries a vital responsibility to address the climate emergency.
For processors, this collaboration represents both a welcome responsibility and an opportunity. Positioned at the heart of the dairy supply chain, processors are uniquely placed to influence change, working with farmers to promote low-emission and nature-friendly practices, supporting biodiversity, and improving resource efficiency, all while ensuring that consumer expectations for sustainable, affordable dairy are met. Processors can also lead the charge in innovation, from low-carbon processing and energy-efficient technologies to waste reduction and smarter logistics.
The Sustainable Dairy Pathways Report, which will be published in 2026, will provide the blueprint for a resilient, net-zero dairy sector. It will deliver an independent analysis of the actions required to achieve key environmental targets, examining the necessary financial support, providing an economic assessment, and outlining the innovation levers essential for the future. The Report will be unique in that it will be co-created with the full value chain, with everyone invited to contribute and own. Once completed, the Report’s findings will feed into the Roadmap.
As the world’s food systems face increasing scrutiny, the UK dairy sector has a unique chance to lead by example. The Dairy Roadmap is not simply about compliance; it’s about building a sustainable and nature-positive future. By embracing this collective vision, together we can shape the industry’s long-term resilience, build stronger relationships, and bridge the gap between on-farm innovation and consumer confidence.
This is the beginning of a new chapter – one that calls for bold, collaborative action. This is an exciting step for the industry. The pathway is being built together, and its success will rest on the shared commitment of the entire value chain to deliver sustainable, nutritious dairy, to help build a bright and resilient future for the sector.
