Plastics packaging technology firm Petainer has chosen a design by students at Birmingham City University in the UK as winner of the company’s second international student design competition.
The competition challenged students to develop innovative new ideas for a PET container for juices and food.
The winning design by students Chan Yung Khang, Yoan Dahan and Richard Barnett was ‘a sleek and classy’ table sauce bottle for ketchups, mayonnaises and other sauce-based condiments, with the potential for easy branding.
Students from Technical University in Liberec, Czech Republic, the University of Skövde in Sweden and Birmingham City University in the UK took part in the four-week contest. Their task was to design an innovative container which had great shelf appeal and high levels of functionality but which also considered sustainability.
“I was incredibly impressed with the quality and high standard of the students’ designs,” says Nigel Pritchard, chief executive of Petainer. “Their attention to detail and innovative ideas made judging the competition a challenging and thought-provoking experience.
“As a company we are passionate about innovation and new ideas, particularly those focused on further improving the sustainability of PET packaging.
“The design competition has given us an opportunity to engage with the brightest and best of Europe’s next generation of designers and it is something that we will continue to foster, and hopefully expand, in future.”
