Appliance of science

It’s great to read that the EFSA has launched a campaign to run across summer to make consumers aware of the science and scientists behind EU food safety. The fact they will help consumers make informed decisions about everyday food choices is welcome. It could give European consumers the opportunity to learn more about what’s provided in stores. It will give European consumers the opportunity to learn more about what’s provided in stores.

The objective of the EU-wide campaign is to encourage Europeans to make confident food choices by explaining the role played by science and scientists in food safety.
Europeans are among the best protected and informed in the world about food chain risks. The EU food safety system gives every European citizen the right to know how the food they eat is produced, processed, packaged, labelled, and sold.

As part of this system, EFSA’s impartial experts review scientific data and studies to evaluate food risks. And in an inter-connected food chain, EFSA cooperates with national food safety authorities across Europe, national partners, and international bodies, so that Europeans can savour their meals with full peace of mind.

The campaign primarily targets 25 to 45-year-olds.The campaign and the actions of EFSA can go some way to impart accurate information at a time when the supply of safe food is a challenge. I hope the campaign presents clear functional and transparent scientific advice to consumers as well as generate additional interest in food safety as the work involves numerous scientists from different disciplines relevant to food safety including nutritionists, biologists, and toxicologists.

The initiative comes at the heels of a recent crackdown on rampant cases of food and beverage fraud across several EU markets led by Europol and Interpol.
As EFSA  says, food comes in many shapes. Whatever you you like, you can get to trust that food is safe. “And that’s thanks to science.”
