Mitie supports Recycle Week

Mitie is taking part in WRAP’s Recycle Week (12-18 September), in partnership with eight clients.

The week is designed to improve general awareness of recycling and this year’s theme – The Unusual Suspects – encourages people to be more diligent when it comes to the disposal of everything from drink cartons, coffee cups and lids to plastic drink bottles and food containers. These are items used every day, but they often don’t get recycled properly, instead ending up in general waste or the wrong recycling bin.

Mitie’s clients taking part include Lloyds, Network Rail, Prudential, Deloitte, North Middlesex Hospital and Rolls-Royce. With help from Mitie’s on-site teams, the organisations will encourage their staff to become ‘waste detectives’ for the week.

Participating employees will be asked to identify waste related ‘unusual suspects’ that are not in the appropriate recycling bin, and ensure they are transferred to the correct container. An important part of the exercise is to share the information with colleagues so that they know not to do the same and to keep a look out for repeat offences.

Incorrect waste disposal makes a significant negative impact on the environment and energy consumption, and simply putting waste in the right bin can make a significant difference. For example:

  • If everyone in the UK recycled one sandwich box, it would save enough energy to run a fridge in over 2,000 homes for a year
  • If everyone in the UK recycled one fizzy drink can, enough energy would be saved to run a TV in over 151,000 homes for a year
  • If just one drink carton is recycled by everyone in the UK, enough energy could be saved to vacuum over 876,000 homes for a year.
