Meat exports up
Beef and lamb exports made a strong recovery from the effects of Foot and Mouth disease in the first half of 2008.
Overseas trade was worth more than £200 million to hard-pressed beef and lamb producers between the first six months – nearly 30% up on last year, according to latest figures from EBLEX, the beef and lamb sector company.
Lamb exports accounted for about 30% of UK production. Beef exports have shown steady year on year growth since BSE restrictions were lifted and 35,000 tonnes were shipped in the first half of the year worth £90 million, about 35% up on the previous year.
