CSM Ingredients Group has released its fourth annual Sustainability Report, outlining a strategy that links ambitious ethical sourcing targets directly to innovation and business growth. The company is positioning its “Thrive for Impact” strategy as a foundation for tripling the volume of its high-growth value added solutions category by 2030.

The report highlights critical progress across its three pillars — People, Planet, and Product — with major commitments centred on tightening its supply chain and investing in sustainable product development.

CSM Ingredients is raising the bar on supply chain diligence, aiming for 100% of its direct materials to be certified by 2030. This commitment covers high-risk commodities including palm oil, cocoa, soya, and paper-based packaging.

In preparation for the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), the Group has rolled out new supplier questionnaires to ensure the ethical, deforestation-free sourcing of these materials. The company also reported significant engagement with its partners, with 90% of direct suppliers by spend monitored through ethical platforms like Sedex and EcoVadis. The goal is to achieve 100% supplier monitoring and assessment on social impacts by the end of 2025.

On the environmental front, CSM Ingredients made notable strides in decarbonisation:

  • Renewable energy: the company now sources 80% of its electricity from renewable sources, a substantial increase from 62% the previous year.
  • Waste reduction: non-hazardous waste decreased by 23%, and the company achieved zero waste sent to landfill.
  • Packaging: in Italy, the Group transitioned its plant-based Creams to Tetra Brik Aseptic packaging, made with 87% renewable materials, leading to a 12% reduction in CO2 emissions.

Driving product momentum, the company is seeing significant commercial success in sustainable alternatives. The report highlighted the launch of Micro Protein, a pioneering micronised protein range, and Egg ’n Easy Plus, an advanced plant-based egg substitute.

“Our 2024 Sustainability Report shows the tangible progress we are making to embed sustainability into every part of our business, from responsible sourcing to innovation,” said Christian Sobolta, CEO of CSM Ingredients Group. “By working closely with our suppliers… we are positioning ourselves to deliver long-term positive impact for people, the planet, and the food industry.”
