Tetra Pak acquires Bioreactors.net to build New Food scale-up

Tetra Pak Processing Equipment SIA has announced the acquisition of Bioreactors.net, a Latvia-based specialist with nearly three decades of experience in designing and manufacturing bioreactor systems.
The strategic move is set to significantly enhance Tetra Pak’s capability to deliver integrated, full-scale production lines for the rapidly emerging New Food sector.
The acquisition, effective 2 December 2025, immediately strengthens Tetra Pak’s processing expertise and equipment portfolio in the critical area of precision and biomass fermentation.
Bioreactors.net, founded in 1996, specialises in delivering cutting-edge fermentation solutions, providing bioreactors capable of producing a range of proteins and other ingredients for New Food applications. Its expertise spans from laboratory and pilot setups to full commercial production systems — directly addressing one of the major pain points facing the alternative protein sector: scaling production efficiently and cost-effectively.
“The addition of Bioreactors.net complements our existing upstream and downstream processing portfolio with fermentation capabilities,” said Rafael Barros, director of the New Food business stream at Tetra Pak. “Together, we will deploy their full portfolio of bioreactor solutions under the Tetra Pak brand—offering advanced food production systems.”
The core strategic goal is to accelerate the development of next-generation bioreactors to empower both emerging innovators and established producers to scale sustainably.
The acquisition is the latest in a series of major investments by Tetra Pak to become a central enabler for the New Food industry. Bioreactors.net’s technology will be integrated with existing Tetra Pak assets, including the Tetra Pak New Food Technology Development Centre in Karlshamn, Sweden, which launched in June 2025 to help manufacturers transition products from prototype to commercial-scale.
Janis Misins-Jubels, head of manufacturing at Bioreactors.net, views the integration as a pivotal moment for technology deployment. “Our decades of expertise in bioreactors, paired with Tetra Pak’s existing portfolio, global reach, and resources, will accelerate the delivery of world-class fermentation solutions to customers around the globe,” he noted.
Biotechnology, fermentation, and bioprocessing technologies are widely viewed as crucial innovations for building more circular and resilient food systems necessary to meet global food demand. This acquisition positions Tetra Pak to provide the complete, specialised processing equipment manufacturers need to drive this systemic change.
