Sweegen, a dominant force in the global wellness and natural taste solutions sector, has officially announced the return of industry veteran Shari Mahon as its new chief commercial officer (CCO).

The appointment, detailed in a formal message published by the company, signals a major push to integrate the firm’s taste modulation technologies into large-scale food and beverage manufacturing.

Mahon, who previously spearheaded Sweegen’s Global Innovation division, returns to the executive suite at a time when the food industry is facing unprecedented pressure to reduce sugar while maintaining premium sensory profiles. Her leadership is expected to bridge the gap between high-level flavour science and the commercial realities of global supply chains.

In her message to the industry, Mahon described her return as a pivotal moment for both her career and the company’s trajectory. She is quoted in the message stating: “Coming back to Sweegen feels like coming home, but to a home that has grown and evolved significantly. I am eager to lead our commercial teams as we scale these world-class innovations globally.”

During her previous tenure, Mahon was instrumental in the development of Sweegen’s proprietary stevia systems. Her return as CCO indicates that the company is now moving beyond the R&D phase of its latest innovations and into a period of commercial expansion.

For food and drink manufacturers, the core of Mahon’s strategy lies in the shift from selling sweeteners to providing total taste transformation. Traditionally, manufacturers have struggled with the off-notes and thin mouthfeel associated with high-intensity sweeteners. Mahon’s message makes it clear that Sweegen’s new mandate is to solve these technical hurdles at the molecular level.

Highlighting the company’s newest toolsets, including the Sweetensify flavour platform and the sweet protein Brazzein, Mahon stated in her message: “With the launch of Sweetensify and our advancements in sweet proteins like Brazzein, we are not just reducing sugar; we are enabling a total taste transformation that does not compromise on the sensory experience.”

This “transformation” is critical for manufacturers who are navigating stricter sugar taxes and a consumer base that demands “clean label” products without the metallic aftertaste of traditional sugar alternatives. By leveraging protein-based taste modulators, Mahon aims to provide a toolkit that allows brands to achieve full-sugar parity.

One of Mahon’s primary commercial targets is to shorten the R&D cycle for Sweegen’s partners. The company has invested heavily in a global network of Innovation Studios — localised laboratories where manufacturers can work side-by-side with Sweegen’s application scientists.

Mahon emphasised that these studios are the engine behind the company’s commercial agility. In her message, she noted: “We are committed to accelerating our customers’ speed-to-market. By leveraging our global Innovation Studios, we provide the local expertise and technical agility required to turn visionary concepts into consumer favourites.”

These studios, located in key regions such as EMEA, LATAM, and APAC, allow manufacturers to adapt formulations to regional palates and local regulatory requirements in real-time, providing a significant competitive advantage in a fast-moving market.

Perhaps the most significant shift outlined in Mahon’s vision is the changing nature of the relationship between Sweegen and its industrial clients. Procurement teams and R&D directors are increasingly looking for partners who can help them navigate the wellness landscape holistically rather than just filling an ingredient order.

Closing her message, Mahon reinforced this commitment to a deep-tier partnership model: “My focus is to move beyond being a supplier to becoming a true strategic partner, helping our customers navigate the complex landscape of taste and wellness.”

As chief commercial officer, Mahon will oversee the global sales teams and technical service departments, ensuring that Sweegen’s innovations in precision fermentation and flavour modulation are accessible to manufacturers of all scales. Her return marks a clear intention: to make Sweegen the primary architect of the next generation of healthy, sustainable, and high-performing food and beverage products.
