Mettler-Toledo transforms food inspection for a high-scrutiny era

Mettler-Toledo Product Inspection has unveiled a strategic shift in its UK operations, moving beyond hardware installation to provide a joined-up quality ecosystem.
The move comes as food, and packaging manufacturers face a new era of “forensic” auditing and increasingly evidence-driven retailer codes of practice.
Historically, food safety inspection was often viewed as a “final checkpoint” at the end of a production line. However, Michael Pipe, Head of Product Inspection for the UK and Ireland at Mettler-Toledo, warns that auditors and retailers are now looking far deeper into the daily management of these systems.
“Compliance is becoming far more forensic,” Pipe explained. “Auditors no longer just want to see that an inspection system is installed; they want to see how it is managed day-to-day, how issues are identified and resolved, and how that evidence is captured. It’s no longer enough for an inspection strategy to work on paper — it has to work in the real world.”
In response to this pressure, Mettler-Toledo is championing a “connected inspection” strategy. This approach integrates four core technologies — checkweighing, metal detection, vision inspection, and X-ray — with centralised data management software like ProdX.
The benefits to the food trade include:
Automated audit readiness: digital quality management tools automate record-keeping, replacing vulnerable paper-based systems with real-time, tamper-proof data.
Operational visibility: by connecting devices across multiple lines, manufacturers can identify performance trends and resolve issues before they lead to product waste or costly recalls.
Reduced manual intervention: integrated systems allow for faster, more accurate data capture, freeing up labour for other critical production tasks.
Consistent evidence: during audits, manufacturers can present consistent, data-driven proof of compliance across all sites and lines.
As equipment becomes more sophisticated, Mettler-Toledo is also doubling down on its regional service model. The company’s UK and Ireland team—comprising specialists across five regions — provides nationwide coverage with home-based engineers. This localised expertise ensures that preventive maintenance and performance verification are handled swiftly, protecting the full equipment lifecycle.
To support the industry’s transition, Mettler-Toledo will be actively engaging with the trade through several key events:
BRCGS Connect (12-13 February): inspection specialists will share practical insights into current best practices for compliance.
UK Demonstration Van Tour (16-27 March): a mobile showroom will travel the country, allowing manufacturers to book on-site visits and test their own products on the latest inspection technologies.
