Nutritionist warns of misconceptions around GLP‑1s

A nutrition expert has raised concerns about persistent myths surrounding GLP‑1 medications, stressing that long‑term outcomes depend heavily on maintaining healthy lifestyle habits alongside treatment.
According to nutritionist Mark Gilbert of PortionIQ, many people mistakenly believe that weight regain is inevitable once they stop taking GLP‑1s. He said this assumption overlooks the role of consistent nutrition and behaviour patterns in supporting long‑term metabolic health.
“Stopping GLP‑1 treatment does not automatically result in weight regain, but it can happen if these sustainable habits are not maintained,” Gilbert explained. He points to evidence showing that “people who stop taking GLP‑1s can regain their lost weight four times faster than those who stop conventional dieting and exercising.” He added: “People who are taking GLP‑1s need to be aware of this pattern.”
Mark emphasised that lifestyle foundations remain crucial even while the medication is being used. “Maintaining a consistent and balanced approach to nutrition and healthy lifestyle habits when taking GLP‑1s can reduce the risk of regaining weight while supporting ongoing metabolic health beyond the period of medication use,” he said. “Without these foundations in place, it can be more difficult for the body to maintain changes achieved during treatment long‑term.”
He also stressed the importance of a broader, more holistic approach to wellbeing. A “fulfilling lifestyle can help people make more sustainable, safe choices while taking GLP‑1s,” he noted, highlighting the need for habits that support health beyond the appetite‑modifying effects of the drugs.
As GLP‑1 use continues to grow, Mark Gilbert’s comments underline the need for clearer communication around how the medications work and what consumers should expect once treatment ends.
