Irish ambient ready meal brand fiid has unveiled a striking rebrand and reformulated product range as it positions itself for accelerated growth across the UK and Ireland.

With a sharper focus on nutrition, shelf impact and consumer relevance, the relaunch signals a decisive shift from functional convenience to a more emotionally resonant, performance-driven proposition.

A defining moment for ambient convenience

fiid’s latest move is a reset designed to capture a rapidly evolving food landscape. The brand has introduced a bold new visual identity alongside improved recipes across its range, including Smoky Black Bean Chilli, Sundried Tomato Lentil Ragu, Golden Curry House Special, and Lentil & Sweet Potato Curry.

Retailing at £2.95 and distributed through Booths, independent retailers, wholesalers, Amazon and direct-to-consumer channels, the range reflects a category under transformation. As consumer demand shifts toward healthier, high-protein, high-fibre options — and with the growing influence of weight management trends — fiid is positioning itself squarely at the intersection of convenience and nutrition.

“This is more than a new look — it’s a statement of intent,” Julia Kessler, CEO of fiid tells Food & Drink Technology. “Too many people struggle to find something that’s quick, easy, delicious and nutritious all at once. fiid was built to solve that problem, and this relaunch is how we bring that solution to far more people.”

From functional to emotional: reframing the brand

At the core of the relaunch is a recognition that fiid’s previous proposition, while clear, lacked emotional resonance.

“We are still the same fiid — just sharper,” says Kessler. “Previously, the proposition was clear in function but less so in emotion. The rebrand brings both together.”

The updated identity focuses on three key objectives: energising the category, improving product navigation, and enhancing shelf visibility. The new design uses bold colour blocking and prominent food imagery to highlight flavour — identified as the primary driver of purchase — while clearer SKU differentiation addresses previous shopper confusion.

“Our previous packaging was functional, but we needed stronger foundations for growth,” explains Kessler. “First, bring energy into the category and connect with a younger, health-focused shopper. That comes through a bolder identity, clearer colour blocking, and food photography that makes flavour the hero — because flavour drives purchase.”

“Second, improve navigation. Consumers struggled to distinguish SKUs. Distinct colour coding solves that, while a consistent logo anchors the range.”

“Third, fix visibility. Key information was being obscured by shelf ready packaging. This time, we tested in real shelf conditions to ensure the pack works where it matters.”

The emphasis on real-world performance is notable. “More broadly, ready meals should feel empowering, not compromising. That is what the brand now communicates.”

Winning the shelf battle

Shelf standout has become a critical battleground in ambient categories, where purchase decisions are often made in seconds.

“Shelf standout is critical. You have seconds to communicate relevance,” fiid states.

The brand worked closely with retail partners throughout the redesign process, using live shelf environments to refine execution. This collaborative approach appears to be paying off, with early indicators suggesting improved engagement.

“Early retailer feedback and initial off-take suggest a clear improvement in shelf engagement.”

The commercial metrics are equally focused. “Rate of sale first. Everything follows from that,” the company emphasises, with KPIs including ROS uplift, repeat purchase rates, and expanded distribution.

Reformulating for modern nutrition

Alongside the visual overhaul, fiid has reformulated its recipes to align with evolving nutritional expectations. The changes include reduced fat, salt and sugar, alongside increased legume content to boost both texture and nutritional density.

“We focused on adding more of what matters,” says Kessler. “That meant increasing legumes to improve texture and nutritional density, while reducing salt where possible without impacting taste.”

Maintaining taste was non-negotiable throughout the process.

“Taste is non-negotiable. Texture is equally important, especially in ambient,” she says.

Achieving this balance required extensive iteration with manufacturing partners, particularly when scaling production.

“Yes. Increasing legume content, for example, required careful balancing to maintain consistency and texture across production. We worked through this collaboratively and landed on a scalable solution.”

The result is a range that aims to challenge entrenched perceptions of ambient food quality.

“Our meals are gently cooked and sealed to preserve flavour, texture and nutrients, enabling ambient shelf life without preservatives,” says Kessler. “The opportunity is to reframe what consumers expect from the category.”

Tapping into health and lifestyle trends

The relaunch comes at a time when consumer attitudes toward food are shifting rapidly. Demand for healthier, functional products is rising, while the mainstreaming of GLP-1 weight management drugs is reshaping how consumers think about satiety and portioning.

“They reinforce our position,” says Kessler of these trends. “Consumers want convenience without compromising nutrition. Our high protein and fibre profile supports satiety, which is increasingly relevant in the context of GLP-1 use.”

This positioning places fiid between traditional ambient and premium chilled offerings.

“We sit between traditional ambient and premium chilled — combining convenience with strong taste and nutrition,” she explains.

The brand is also challenging the perception that chilled automatically equates to higher quality.

“Against chilled, we challenge the assumption that fresh is inherently better by focusing on the outcome.”

Targeting growth without losing core loyalty

A key challenge for any rebrand is balancing new customer acquisition with existing loyalty. fiid appears to be navigating this carefully.

“We are targeting a younger, health-conscious, time-poor consumer who wants convenience without compromise,” says Kessler. “At the same time, we have retained the fiid name to protect existing equity, including a 72% returning customer rate.”

“The rebrand broadens appeal without losing the base.”

The strategy is to scale while maintaining the integrity of the proposition.

“The focus has been on turning a strong brand into a scalable commercial engine,” Kessler explains. “That includes sharper strategy, stronger operations, and deeper consumer understanding.

Innovation pipeline and category expansion

Looking ahead, fiid is preparing to extend its offer through targeted innovation.

“We have innovation planned later this year focused on ease of use, format, and expanding meal occasions,” says Kessler. “It stays true to our core but pushes convenience further.”

Rather than rapid diversification, the approach is disciplined and incremental.

“Short term, focus matters. Expanding too early dilutes impact.”

The immediate priority is to strengthen relevance across key consumption moments.

“That includes strengthening relevance across lunch, post-workout and evening occasions before expanding further.”

Speed-to-market remains a critical factor, though not without constraints.

“With ~14-week packaging lead times, success depends on disciplined upfront decision-making.”

Retail execution and distribution strategy

Commercial execution is central to the relaunch’s success. fiid’s growth strategy hinges on two primary levers: improving rate of sale and expanding distribution.

“First, build a strong ROS story supported by marketing and in-store activation to drive trial and repeat,” Kessler outlines. “Second, demonstrate clear differentiation to retailers — showing fiid brings incremental shoppers into the category.”

Retailer response has been encouraging.

“Early response has been very positive,” she says. “Retailers recognise the step change, and conversations have shifted towards growth.”

Beyond retail, the brand is also exploring complementary channels.

“Retail comes first. We are also exploring foodservice as a complementary channel to drive trial and awareness.”

Sustainability as a baseline

While sustainability is not the headline of the relaunch, it remains embedded in fiid’s proposition.

“We start from a strong base: plant-based, long shelf life, and reduced waste,” says Kessler. “From there, it is continuous improvement.”

Packaging innovation is part of that journey.

“We are exploring improved recyclability, including mono-material solutions, while maintaining product integrity.”

Redefining the category

Ultimately, fiid’s relaunch is about redefining what ambient convenience food can deliver.

“Our long-term role is to redefine what ambient convenience food can deliver — combining taste, nutrition and ease in a way the category has not historically achieved,” says Kessler.

The coming months will determine whether the refreshed identity and reformulated products can translate into sustained commercial momentum. For fiid, however, the ambition is already firmly established.

“The relaunch is the starting point — execution now matters.”
