SIG has announced a significant 24% year-over-year sales growth in 2025 for its aluminium-layer-free aseptic cartons, signalling a major shift in the food and beverage industry’s transition toward low-carbon, circular packaging.

The double-digit surge highlights a growing market appetite for “recycle-ready” solutions that strip away the traditional foil barrier to further reduce the carbon footprint of standard aseptic packs. This commercial traction is particularly evident in Europe, where the company’s SIG Terra solutions now account for over 10% of all food and drink packed in SIG aseptic cartons, compared to a 5% share globally.

One of the primary drivers behind this rapid adoption is the operational ease for manufacturers. Beverage producers can transition to full-barrier aseptic cartons without an aluminium layer while maintaining total compatibility with existing SIG filling lines. This allows brands to execute swift sustainability upgrades with minimal adjustments to their production floor and, crucially, no additional capital expenditure.

“Our commitment to scalable, impactful innovation is paying off – not just for SIG, but for our customer’s entire value chain,” stated Christoph Wegener, chief markets officer at SIG. “The significant growth in our aseptic cartons without aluminium layer shows that our innovations in low-carbon packaging systems have gained broad-based commercial traction, and are not only helping brands, manufacturers, and retailers to confidently meet rapidly evolving regulatory and consumer expectations, but also to significantly advance their sustainability goals.”

The flagship SIG Terra portfolio remains at the heart of the company’s regenerative strategy. Beyond the removal of aluminium, the range incorporates polymers linked to forest-based and recycled feedstocks via a certified mass balance system. This approach to material science has seen the SIG Terra range — including aseptic cartons, bag-in-box, and spouted pouches — used to package approximately 7 billion litres of food to date, with nearly 2 billion litres delivered in 2025 alone.

The global ramp-up of the SIG Terra Alu-free + Full barrier material has proven to be a milestone for the sector, validating that high-protection packaging does not have to come at a high environmental cost. Independent ISO-compliant life-cycle assessments continue to rank these packs among the most sustainable in their respective segments.

As the industry moves from setting sustainability ambitions to implementing them at scale, SIG’s performance serves as a bellwether for the commercial viability of truly sustainable packaging. By removing the aluminium barrier — traditionally the most carbon-intensive component of a carton — SIG is redefining industry standards and paving the way for widespread adoption across global supply chains.

The company has indicated it expects to expand the market share of these aluminium-free solutions significantly in the near future, as more retailers and manufacturers look to future-proof their portfolios against tightening environmental legislation.
