Calculator gives Ravenwood’s linerless the commercial green light

Media Silicone Weight Calculator
Ravenwood has launched a new environmental impact calculator designed to give packaging teams hard data on the savings achievable when switching from self‑adhesive labels to linerless – a move that could accelerate adoption across FMCG, retail and logistics.
The tool, developed to support Ravenwood’s linerless programme, quantifies reductions in waste, energy use, transport emissions and overall carbon footprint. For an industry under pressure from PPWR, Scope 3 reporting and retailer-led sustainability scorecards, the calculator provides the one thing procurement and operations teams have been missing: verifiable numbers.
What the calculator does
At its core, the calculator models the environmental and operational impact of replacing traditional pressure‑sensitive labels – which require a silicone-coated backing liner – with Ravenwood’s linerless format. By removing the liner entirely, users can measure:
- Material savings — fewer raw materials per label, lower waste volumes and reduced disposal costs.
- Carbon reductions — less substrate, fewer pallets shipped, and lower energy consumption during production.
- Operational efficiencies — longer reel lengths, fewer changeovers and improved uptime.
- Transport optimisation — more labels per shipment and reduced logistics emissions.
Ravenwood says the calculator has already been validated across multiple customer trials, giving packaging teams confidence to model real-world scenarios rather than rely on generic sustainability claims.
The launch lands at a critical moment. With PPWR entering force and major retailers tightening packaging scorecards, brands need quantifiable improvements – not just incremental tweaks. Linerless has long been recognised for its sustainability potential, but adoption has been slowed by uncertainty around measurable gains.
The calculator directly addresses that gap.
For packaging manufacturers, it provides a data-backed business case to present to customers. For brands, it supports internal sustainability reporting and helps justify investment in linerless-compatible print-and-apply systems. And for retailers, it offers a consistent methodology to compare suppliers.
From sustainability to cost
Beyond environmental metrics, the calculator also highlights commercial gains such as lower material costs per label, reduced storage requirements, fewer machine stoppages, higher throughput and lower waste-handling fees
In a market where margins are tight and sustainability targets are non-negotiable, the ability to quantify both cost and carbon savings makes linerless significantly easier to justify at scale.
With major packaging groups already investing in linerless, the calculator is likely to become a standard decision-making tool for packaging engineers, procurement teams and sustainability leads.
