As the global demand for premium rice continues to surge, Italian packaging pioneer Dolzan Impianti has unveiled a specialised suite of vertical packaging systems designed to protect grain quality from the factory floor to the international consumer.

The new range addresses a critical challenge in the rice supply chain: maintaining organoleptic properties while preventing oxidation and infestations during long-distance transport.

By offering both vacuum and modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) on a single modular platform, Dolzan is providing rice producers with unprecedented flexibility to meet diverse market standards.

For rice destined for large-scale distribution or overseas export, Dolzan’s vacuum packaging is the gold standard. By removing air from the pack, the risk of oxidation and pest infestation is virtually eliminated, significantly extending shelf life without the need for preservatives.

The machines are engineered for high precision, utilising volumetric cup dosers and multi-head weigher systems to handle formats ranging from 500g up to 5kg. The result is a compact, “brick-style” package that is durable, uniform, and optimized for palletisation.

For high-end or aromatic rice varieties, where preserving the delicate “new crop” fragrance is essential, Dolzan’s MAP technology offers a sophisticated alternative. By injecting a precise protective gas mixture into the bag, the system prevents mould formation and locks in aroma and freshness.

These MAP units are designed to work with high-performance barrier films, ensuring that the protective atmosphere remains stable even through fluctuating temperatures in the global supply chain.

In a significant win for production efficiency, Dolzan’s latest innovation allows companies to switch between vacuum and MAP modes on the same machine. This modular approach allows producers to pivot their packaging strategy based on the specific rice variety or target market without investing in multiple lines.

“The ability to integrate both systems into the same machine provides a significant competitive advantage,” the company stated. “It optimises investment, reduces floor space, and maintains high-quality standards across diverse product lines.”

Beyond preservation, the new lines are built for the modern smart factory. Certified food-grade components ensure ease of cleaning and hygiene, while integrated automation reduces product waste. To meet the rigorous transparency demands of the modern food trade, the systems can be fully equipped with weight control systems, metal detectors and traceability printers.

As the industry moves toward more resilient and efficient supply chains, Dolzan’s dual-preservation approach offers rice millers a robust tool to ensure their product arrives in perfect condition, whether it’s headed to a local supermarket or a boutique retailer half a world away.
