Alpaca snack hits US

A new snack made from alpaca meat has been declared ‘innovation of the week’ by Datamonitor’s Product Launch Analytics.

The manufacturer of La Pacos Alpaca Jerky, which has just hit supermarket shelves in the US, claim that the product is healthier than traditional beef jerky as alpaca meat is leaner.

“Alpaca meat is an unusual choice for jerky but as it is high in protein and low in cholesterol, it could prove popular,” says Tom Vierhile, director of PLA. “It is an example of reinventing a traditional snack. However, although the jerky will attract attention due to its novelty value, its health credentials could see it become a fixture on shelves – if consumers can overcome the idea of eating alpaca.”
