The categories have been announced for the annual Society of Food Hygiene Technology (SOFHT) awards, with winners to be announced in November.

Now in their 12th year, the awards recognise and celebrate excellence in food safety and hygiene within the food and associated industries and are judged by a panel of experienced food industry professionals from the society’s membership.

Winners will be announced on 17 November at a luncheon at The Savoy Strand in London. Lecturing at the luncheon this year will be acclaimed journalist, broadcaster and food critic Jay Rayner. Notably famous for his food column in The Observer, Rayner also writes for GQ and Cosmopolitan, and presents a weekly report on The One Show alongside Chris Evans. His 2016 SOFHT lecture will be called ‘A Greedy Man in a Hungry World’ and it will be a journey across the landscape of food.

Entry to the SOFHT awards is free and nominations are welcome from all disciplines within the food industry and its suppliers. Entrants must be SOFHT members based in the UK or internationally, and can either nominate themselves or be nominated by a person or company (employees of a business sponsoring an award will not be permitted to apply for the award they sponsor).

Categories for 2016 are as follows:

  • Best Trainer
  • Company of the Year
  • Best Training Company
  • Best Auditor/Technologist
  • Best New Product & Service
  • The Dorothy Cullinane Award for ‘Outstanding Achievement’.

Karen Middleton-Gell, SOFHT director, says, “The SOFHT Awards are now in their 12th year and they just get bigger and better each year. The endorsement of colleagues from the industry or simply gaining recognition for the contribution that an individual or business has made to food safety in the last year is a tremendous accolade. There will be stiff competition this year.

“We are also delighted that Jay Rayner has agreed to be our keynote speaker, which will ensure an entertaining start to our annual awards luncheon.”
