A proposal by the European parliament’s environment committee to halve food waste by 2030 has been welcomed by the UK Former Foodstuffs Processors Association (UKFFPA).

The proposal will be voted on by the full parliament in March. It was one of four proposals on boosting recycling, reducing landfill and curbing food waste which were debated by the committee.

Paul Featherstone, chairman of UKFFPA, which represents companies that take materials that would have been sent to waste and turns them into valuable animal feedstuffs, comments, “We are pleased to see that the environment committee of the European parliament is recognising the importance of taking a ‘farm to fork’ approach to food waste, rather just targeting retailers and consumers.

“Working with our traditional sector of food manufacturers, we are already reducing waste and creating added value feeds. Now we are looking to encourage more food manufacturers, as well as the logistics sector and retailers, to work with us – reducing food waste in manufacturing and sales, helping to reach ambitious targets, such as this one set by the environment committee.”
