Emirates Biotech, a leading producer of PLA (polylactic acid) biopolymers in the Middle East, has officially joined the Circle Consortium, a major European initiative dedicated to the circular economy.

The partnership aims to accelerate the commercial viability of producing high-performance bioplastics directly from organic food waste.

The addition of the UAE-based firm to the European consortium marks a significant cross-continental bridge in the quest to decarbonise the food and drink industry’s secondary and tertiary packaging.

The Circle (Circular PLA) project focuses on developing a closed-loop system for PLA. While PLA is already a popular bio-based alternative to petroleum-derived plastics, the consortium is specifically refining the technology to use food waste — rather than virgin agricultural crops — as the primary feedstock.

By joining the group, Emirates Biotech will provide its technical expertise in PLA production and its insights into the Middle Eastern supply chain, where food waste management is a key pillar of the UAE’s “Year of Sustainability” and “Circular Economy Policy 2021–2031.”

For manufacturers and retailers, the integration of Emirates Biotech into this consortium signals three major shifts in the packaging landscape:

  1. Feedstock diversification: the project aims to reduce the food versus plastic debate by ensuring that the biopolymers used in food packaging do not compete with human food crops.
  2. Scalable circularity: Emirates Biotech’s involvement suggests a move toward industrial-scale production. This is expected to stabilise the supply of PLA, which has historically been subject to price volatility and limited availability.
  3. Regulatory alignment: as Europe’s Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) and similar global mandates tighten, this partnership provides a roadmap for brands to adopt “waste-origin” materials that meet stringent carbon-footprint requirements.

“Joining the Circle Consortium is a milestone in our mission to lead the transition to a circular bio-economy,” said Marc Verbruggen, CEO of Emirates Biotech. “By turning food waste into valuable PLA, we are not only addressing a massive environmental challenge but also providing the food and drink industry with the sustainable materials they need to meet their ESG goals.”

The consortium, which includes leading academic institutions and industrial partners across Europe, will utilise Emirates Biotech’s future production capacity — currently under development in the UAE — to test and validate these waste-derived polymers in real-world packaging applications.
