Storage wars

Supermarket giant Asda, one of the UK’s ‘big four’, has sparked nationwide debate over where tomato ketchup should be stored – fridge or cupboard?

The retailer conducted a survey asking people where they preferred to keep the sauce. Opinion was divided, with 53 per cent opting for the fridge.

As a result, a ‘half and half’ strategy is being trialled in its Clapham, London superstore, with half of Asda’s stock of own brand ketchup being stored in the fridge and the other half remaining at room temperature on shelf with its fellow condiments.

Asda’s Victoria Williams says, “Tomato ketchup is a staple of many of our customers’ weekly shop but recent debate has prompted us to trial two areas to stock our great value own brand tomato ketchup sauces, so we can end the debate once and for all and give everyone what they want.”

I’m in the ‘fridge once opened’ camp (although now I think about it, I’ll still eat ketchup in restaurants, which tend to keep it at room temperature). You?
