UK students this week went behind the scenes at United Biscuits’ McVitie’s factory in Manchester – the home of the Jaffa Cake – as part of the See Inside Manufacturing scheme.

The government initiative to get young people interested in careers in manufacturing saw students tour the factory and see how brands such as Jaffa Cakes, Chocolate Digestives and Penguins are made.

They were also able to meet different people in the factory to find out more about their jobs and the qualifications needed to do them.

“UB is one of many companies across the UK opening their doors to young people and getting them excited about careers in manufacturing,” says Terry Jones, FDF director of communications.

Adds Lesley Flood, training coordinator at McVitie’s Manchester:
“We are trying to change students’ views of manufacturing. We want them to see us as a great career opportunity with huge potential.

“Students can often be surprised to find out that you need a certain level of English and Maths skills to be considered for a role at McVitie’s. We have a wide range of entrance levels from unskilled to apprentices, graduates and technical experts. We help and encourage our employees to work their way up the career ladder.”
