Nomad Foods invests £2.2m to boost UK waffle production

Nomad Foods has strengthened its UK manufacturing footprint with a £2.2 million investment in a new potato waffle production line at its Lowestoft factory — a move that expands capacity, supports long‑term productivity goals and reinforces the company’s commitment to UK food security.
The upgrade forms part of Nomad Foods’ wider multi‑year productivity programme, aimed at increasing efficiency, competitiveness and scale across its European manufacturing network.
According to the company, the new line will lift total waffle output to 18,250 tonnes per year, equivalent to nearly 45 million potato waffles, ensuring continued supply of one of Britain’s most recognisable frozen staples.
Strengthened UK supply resilience
The Lowestoft site is one of the UK’s most important frozen food facilities, producing Birds Eye chicken dippers, potato waffles, peas and coated fish. By expanding capacity at a time of global supply chain pressure, Nomad Foods is reinforcing its ability to keep essential frozen categories accessible for UK families.
A major step in long‑term productivity plans
The investment follows a recent £12 million upgrade in chicken processing and sits alongside plans for an on‑site wind turbine to secure predictable renewable energy costs. Together, these initiatives form a strategic push to modernise operations and reduce long‑term cost volatility.
Enhanced efficiency and future‑ready production
The new line is designed for improved workflow, higher throughput and greater reliability — all essential as demand for frozen foods continues to rise. The Lowestoft factory already operates 24/7 to meet consumer demand, and the additional capacity ensures Nomad Foods can scale without compromising quality.
Support for European growth
Around 15% of Lowestoft’s output is exported to other Nomad Foods markets. The expanded waffle capacity strengthens the company’s ability to meet rising European demand for core frozen categories.
Eduardo Bachiega, chief supply officer at Nomad Foods, said the investment reflects the company’s long‑term commitment to UK manufacturing and its role in feeding the nation.
“By increasing our production capacity we’re directly responding to consumer demand for household favourites… ensuring key frozen food categories remain an accessible food choice for families across the UK and Europe.”
