Recyclability influences coffee capsule choices

A survey of 2,565 coffee capsule buyers across France, Italy, Spain and the UK found that 34% consider recyclability one of the main reasons for choosing a capsule type, while a further 30% say it plays a role in their decision.

However, the findings suggest that packaging manufacturers and coffee brands need to consider more than environmental credentials when developing capsule formats. Consumers also associate different materials with coffee quality, value for money and ease of use.

Recycling perceptions remain similar

Consumers perceive aluminium and plastic capsules as similarly easy to recycle. Six in ten (60%) respondents believe aluminium capsules are easy to recycle or dispose of in their area, compared with 57% for plastic.

However, more than a quarter find recycling or disposal complicated, with 27% saying this about aluminium capsules and 28% about plastic.

These perceptions do not necessarily reflect whether capsules are collected, sorted and recycled in practice. Clearer recycling guidance could help address the gap, with on-pack QR codes linking consumers to location-specific information among the options available to brands.

Environmental considerations also influence material preference. Among consumers who prefer aluminium capsules, 47% cite environmental benefits and recyclability as a reason for their choice. The figure is 39% among those who prefer plastic.

Material selection is also becoming more closely linked to regulatory requirements. The EU’s Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) introduces a minimum 10% post-consumer recycled (PCR) content requirement for applicable polypropylene (PP) food-contact packaging by 2030. Coffee brands will need to consider how their packaging strategies respond to these requirements alongside consumer expectations.

Material influences coffee quality perceptions

Recyclability is not the only factor shaping capsule choices. The research found that 60% of respondents associate aluminium capsules with higher-quality coffee, compared with 17% for plastic.

Packaging material also influences how consumers perceive the coffee itself, with 77% believing it affects taste. Among those who prefer aluminium capsules, 40% cite the preservation of taste and aroma as a key reason for their preference.

For manufacturers, this highlights the importance of understanding how packaging contributes to the perceived quality of the finished product. Material choice can influence the coffee experience as well as the environmental credentials of the pack.

Value and convenience remain important

While aluminium is more strongly associated with coffee quality, plastic capsules appeal to consumers on affordability and practicality.

Among those who prefer plastic capsules, 56% cite better value for money, while 50% point to their wider availability. Ease of use and handling is also a consideration, cited by 30% of consumers who prefer the experience of plastic capsules.

The findings point to a balance for coffee brands and packaging suppliers: recyclability, perceived quality, affordability and convenience all contribute to consumer choice. A material that performs well on one measure may not necessarily meet expectations on another.

Sarah Neerkorn, senior market insights manager at Amcor, says: “While recyclability is important to coffee capsule buyers, brands must understand the full picture. Factors such as quality, value and convenience are all key to a great coffee experience. Brands have an opportunity to stand out by aligning their packaging with consumers’ priorities, with aluminium and plastic both offering strong options.

“As regulatory requirements evolve through the EU’s Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), choosing the right packaging will be key to balancing sustainability ambitions with customer expectations.”
