SalzburgMilch lifts the lid on gains with SIG’s carton

SalzburgMilch is putting packaging innovation front and centre as it becomes the first dairy in Europe to commercially produce on SIG’s DomeMini 12 Aseptic filling line, debuting its popular Alex (chocolate milk) and Lisa (vanilla milk) drinks in the DomeMini carton bottle.
The move marks a significant shift in how the Austrian premium dairy approaches on‑the‑go formats — and the early gains are already clear.
A carton bottle that changes the game
SIG DomeMini brings together the protective and environmental advantages of carton packaging with the convenience of a bottle, giving SalzburgMilch a format that stands out visually while reducing plastic use. The large, centrally positioned closure makes the pack easy to open, reseal and drink from, offering true on‑the‑go functionality for children and families.
For SalzburgMilch, the switch unlocks a combination of stronger shelf differentiation, premium brand presentation, and a higher share of renewable materials — all while supporting the company’s sustainability ambitions.
Efficiency gains on the filling line
At the heart of the rollout is the SIG DomeMini 12 Aseptic filling line, capable of filling 12,000 packs per hour across seven volume sizes (180–350 ml) on a single machine. Crucially, the line allows volume changes in just 15 minutes, giving SalzburgMilch new agility in responding to customer and retailer demand.
This flexibility is already opening doors: the dairy is developing additional on‑the‑go concepts with brand owners and retail partners, supported by its central European location and co‑packing potential.
Why SalzburgMilch made the move
- Shelf standout through a distinctive bottle‑shaped carton
- Reduced plastic compared to traditional plastic bottles
- Operational efficiency via fast changeovers and multi‑volume capability
- New product opportunities in UHT, protein, plant‑based and meal‑replacement categories
- Stronger co‑packing appeal for European brand owners
Andreas Gasteiger, managing director at SalzburgMilch, said: “With the production start on the SIG DomeMini 12 Aseptic filling line, we are opening up exciting new opportunities. Alex and Lisa in SIG DomeMini are only the beginning – we are already working on additional product concepts that will follow soon.”
Nino Schmid, senior key account manager at SIG, added: “The start of commercial production at SalzburgMilch marks an important milestone for SIG DomeMini in Europe. With its unique bottle shape, SIG DomeMini delivers the perfect combination of on‑the‑go convenience, strong differentiation on shelf, and much less plastic compared to plastic bottles.”
A new chapter for European dairy
With SalzburgMilch leading the way, SIG DomeMini is set to give European dairy brands a fresh route into premium, portable, sustainable formats — and SalzburgMilch’s early gains suggest the carton bottle could quickly become a category‑shaping innovation.
