Chocolate or biscuit?

Last week I wrote about some of the food and drink products that have been discontinued over the years and are dearly missed by the Bell Publishing team. One of those was Galaxy Truffle, which was removed from Celebrations in 2011 and replaced with Twix.

The mention of Twix sparked fresh debate in the office as a few days before, Richard Osman, host of British quiz show Pointless, had ignited a debate on Twitter over whether a Twix is a chocolate bar or biscuit:

Opinion is divided in the office. Half side with Osman – it is just a bigger version of Fox’s BISCUITS’ BISCUIT bar Rocky Caramel, isn’t it? – while half believe it deserves its chocolate bar status – you will, after all, find it nestled among the other chocolate bars in the supermarket.

One colleague remained neutral: “It’s a lovely biscuity chocolate bar.” And another questioned the category of Kit Kats – interesting, two-finger = biscuit bar, but four finger = chocolate bar. “It’s a wafer,” said neutral, throwing another classification into the mix.

Then the Jaffa CAKE cake or biscuit argument presented itself again…

As Stephen Fry pointed out on QI – Jaffa Cakes are classified as’cakes’ because they go hard when left out. Biscuits go soft!
