When one door closes…

Had to smile this week at the news that Mars bars could apparently vanish from Britain’s shelves in a matter of weeks if the UK departs the EU without a deal. Not because I dislike Mars (that said, I can only eat one if it’s cut into slices and refrigerated. Weird, huh?) but because the whole EU Exit debacle shows no sign of being concluded to the satisfaction of the majority nor, perhaps, the nation’s sweet-eaters.

Food and drink industry experts have warned that the chewy chocolate bar, as well as other confectionery imports to the UK, will dramatically increase in price if we cannot agree a deal with Brussels.

Now while the prospect of food imports potentially being barred from entering the UK via Dover in the event of a hard Brexit is absolutely no laughing matter (Cadbury is said to be stockpiling chocolate and biscuits in case of such a scenario) I’m a glass half full kind of gal (unless it’s a wine glass, in which case it’s invariably empty), and always look for the positives in even the most apparently negative of situations. So perhaps the fears over a no-deal Brexit can be assuaged by the fact it may unwittingly be a step in the right direction in the ongoing fight against obesity and type 2 diabetes.

As Alexander Graham Bell himself said, ‘when one door closes, a window opens’ (let’s just hope it’s big enough to shove some articulated lorries through, eh?)
