NUTRA NEWS: Greenpeace omega-3 claims attacked

Food scientists and milk processing professionals in Germany have joined forces to attack claims by the environmental organisation Greenpeace that organic yoghurts tend to have the highest contents of omega-3 fatty acids.

“Completely false and confusing for the consumer, was the reaction of the leading independent food laboratory centre MUVA. Dr Gisela Runge, head scientific manager with the German milk processors’ Association (MIV) added,“The Greenpeace approach represents a blatant deception of consumers. Behind the uproar is a test of 33 brands of yoghurt and butter for their fatty acid content ordered by Greenpeace from the MUVA centre. The results did indicate that certain yoghurts had much higher omega-3 contents than others, but Greenpeace chose to interpret – and publish – the results without taking into consideration the fat content of the products so that an ‘unscientific’ result was announced which just happened to indicate that organically produced yoghurts had the highest omega-3 content.
