Top food supplier declared one of UK’s greenest companies

Muntons, a supplier of malt and malted ingredients to the food industry, has been named one of the country’s ‘greenest’ companies in a new Sunday Times environmental ranking.

The Suffolk-based business was placed 41st by judges in the newspaper’s cross-sector Top 60 Best Green Companies awards scheme.

The competition recognises companies in all industries that have gone the extra mile to minimise their impact on the environment. The Sunday Times chose Muntons, which supplies malt products to the retail, brewing and food manufacturing sectors, for a number of initiatives involving both operations at its factories in Stowmarket, Suffolk, and Bridlington, East Yorkshire, and its employees.

The newspaper said of the company’s environmental efforts:“Muntons aims to save 12 per cent of energy for each ton of product manufactured by 2010 and reports it is way ahead of its target. Last year, it invested £1m to become greener and, over the past two years, has saved a further £1m by implementing energy saving initiatives. Internationally, the firm’s water consumption is already one of the lowest in the industry.
