Tate & Lyle is celebrating the UN’s International Day of Zero Waste with the announcement of an expanded partnership.

The agreement is designed to strengthen circular value chains and maximise the environmental and commercial potential of its co‑products business.

The global ingredients company has extended its agreement with Van Triest CirQlar, part of ForFarmers, to manage sales and distribution of citrus pulp co‑products generated at Tate & Lyle’s pectin production facility in Großenbrode, Germany. The move supports the company’s commitment to beneficially use 100% of its waste by 2030.

Tate & Lyle’s pectin is produced from upcycled citrus fruit peels — a co‑product of the juice industry. After pectin extraction, the remaining nutritious material becomes a citrus pulp co‑product widely used in animal feed. The Großenbrode site has supplied farmers in northern Germany with this material for more than 40 years.

By bringing citrus pulp into its existing partnership with Van Triest CirQlar — which already manages several corn‑based co‑products from Tate & Lyle’s Koog aan de Zaan facility in the Netherlands — the company is aligning its co‑product operations across sites and tapping into specialist market expertise.

The agreement provides long‑term market access, structured pricing and reduced commercial risk, while ensuring consistent offtake and improved planning reliability.

Sönke Schweiger, Tate & Lyle plant director in Großenbrode, said:  “At our Großenbrode facility, we turn upcycled citrus peels into high value ingredients and give their co-products a second life – that’s circularity in action. With this expanded partnership, we can maximise the commercial and environmental value of our pectin production. By harmonising our co-products models across two sites drawing on external expertise, we can focus on delivering high quality, functional food and drink ingredients that support healthier diets while caring for our planet and making good use of its resources.”

For Van Triest CirQlar, the agreement represents an expansion of its citrus pulp activities in Germany.

Roel van Haeren, managing director Van Triest CirQlar Europe, said:  “This partnership aligns with our objective to lead in managed co‑product value chains and is an important step in further strengthening our relationship with Tate & Lyle. It is a strategic expansion of our activities in Germany and our citrus pulp position in this market. It’s exactly how Van Triest CirQlar grows – by professionalising co‑product streams and turning them into dependable, circular value.”

Announced on the UN’s International Day of Zero Waste, the partnership underscores Tate & Lyle’s broader sustainability strategy, which centres on reducing waste, optimising resource use and embedding circularity across its global operations.

By leveraging Van Triest CirQlar’s customer network and active market management, Tate & Lyle aims to enhance value realisation from its co‑products while reinforcing its position as a leader in sustainable ingredient production.
