FIR consultation launched

FIR consultation launchedDefra is asking UK businesses and consumers for their views on plans for new legislation to improve the information provided to shoppers, allowing them to make informed choices about the food they buy.
The updated legislation will implement the European Union food labelling legislation (Regulation (EU) No 1169/2011) and will also reflect current industry practice and consumers’ changing information needs, according to the Food Standards Agency.
The proposed regulation includes changes to the provision of allergen information in catering establishments, nutrition labelling, labelling of nanomaterials and a number of other labelling provisions.
There are still decisions to be made about how best to implement the UK legislation – the Food Information Regulation – and so the Government is encouraging businesses and interested parties to respond to the consultation, which ends on 30 January 2013.
