Research dispels correlation between dairy and weight gain

Scientists investigating milk and dairy consumption have largely found no association with obesity in children and adolescents.

Researchers found that eating dairy can aid body fat loss in a calorie restricted diet. It is believed that the calcium and protein in dairy can stimulate feelings of fullness and calcium can also reduce the amount of fat that is absorbed in the gut.

The evidence for an inverse association between the consumption of milk, yogurt and cheese and body fatness and weight gain is growing. There are an extensive number of human studies showing this among children, teenagers and adults.

Dr Anne Mullen, director of nutrition at The Dairy Council, says, “There is a misconception that milk and dairy are full of fat and high in calories. Per portion, they contribute a relatively small amount of fat and calories when consumed as part of a healthy, balanced diet.

“Milk and dairy foods are often targeted in public health obesity campaigns as an ‘easy’ way of reducing calories. However, the calories in milk and dairy are far from ‘empty’ – they are nutrient-rich and nutrient-dense, and are integral to healthy eating at all life stages.”
