Huge expansion in range of fairtrade products

The range of fairtrade products is growing at a huge rate, expanding far beyond tea, coffee and chocolate.

Two new own-brand all natural nut products can now be bought at Tesco – a chopped brazil nut and dried apricot mix and a peanut, cashew and dried mango mix.
More fruity products have also become available. Beyond the fairtrade staples such as bananas, mangoes, citrus, avocados and grapes, pineapple and orange have been added to the bunch.
On the dried fruit front, the first Fairtrade dried apricots are now available from
independent stores supplied by Tropical Wholefoods.
One is a new health bar – organic apricot and kernel, that uses both the fruit and the stone and has been specially developed to have a lower sugar and fat content.
Fairtrade fruit juices are available from the Natural Beverage Company, while quinoa, biscuits, spices and rice are also becoming widely available in Fairtrade options.
“With an ever growing range of healthy Fairtrade options, it’s now perfectly possible to combine a healthy lifestyle with bringing about positive changes for farmers in developing countries, said Barbara Crowther from the Fairtrade Foundation.
