Cakes & biscuits – changing inside and out

The cake and biscuit sector has clearly responded to the growing demand for better-for-you snacks. In August 2006 the total biscuit category was worth £120 million (£176m). The healthier biscuit sector has been showing growth and was worth £24 million in August 2006, compared to £20 million in August 2004.

Malachy McReynolds, managing director of Elizabeth Shaw and president of the BCCCA said,“If we look back five years it was unusual for our foods to carry nutritional information.
“Now the sector is not only committed to giving information on the Big 8, but we have gone further still. Eighty five per cent of the sector will implement the display of Guidline Daily Amounts, or GDAs, on packs.“Our consumers can see, for example,
how many calories or how much protein it contains and also roughly how many calories and how much protein they should be eating each day.
The Biscuit Cake Chocolate & Confectionery Association (BCCCA) report, A Changing Industry – Inside and Out states the changes and aims of the industry which maintains its concern for diet and lifestyle and the necessity to produce a healthy nation.
