Unicorn awarded BRC Broker standard

Unicorn Ingredients, a leading British supplier of ingredients for the bakery and specialist breads markets has been awarded the BRC Standard for Agents and Brokers as a Broker of seeds, oils (sesame and olive), honey and pulses.

BRC Global Standards is an internationally recognised safety and quality certification programme designed to guarantee the standardisation of quality, safety and operational criteria. Often a fundamental requirement of leading retailers, the standards are used by over 23,000 certificated suppliers in 123 countries.

The Agents and Brokers module was added to the BRC Standard in 2014. It recognises the critical link agents and brokers provide in the movement and trade of products and the role they play in influencing supplier product safety and quality standards as well as their responsibility for “maintaining an effective chain of traceability.”

Unicorn Ingredients sources its products from independent farmers and co-operatives based around the world and imports them into the UK. In order to achieve the BRC Standard it has worked closely with its suppliers and helped them to put in place the necessary standards and procedures to gain approval.

“We have every faith in our suppliers,” says joint managing director, Nikki Divers, “but this Standard is about displaying information, demonstrating best practice and giving our customers the confidence that we know everything there is to know about the products we sell. As a supply chain specialist, it is vital that we demonstrate to our customers that we understand how important this is.

“The first step is to ensure the senior management teams are fully committed to food safety, monitoring, reviewing and taking action as required. The management system has to have food safety at its heart and this starts with the approval of the supplier.”

BRC Agents and Brokers is a rigorous standard, designed to reflect best practice and provide a common sense, risk-based approach to product safety and certification. It is an ongoing process and Unicorn Ingredients will now be audited annually to ensure the standard is maintained.
