Take a hike, Freddo

The dust has barely settled on Mondelēz International’s unveiling of its new shape Toblerone bars, complete with great big gaps, but the confectionery giant has sparked a fresh social media storm with reports that the price of Freddo bars will soon rise to 30p in the UK.

I, as I’m sure many of you will do too, remember the days when the chocolate frog would set you back just 10p. Indeed, the cost of the treat has soared since 2000, rising to 17p in 2010 and up to 25p in 2014.

Let’s not forget that the size has decreased in that time too: when launched, Freddos weighed 17g, growing to 20g in 2007, before shifting a couple of grams to 18g four years later.

As with the Toblerone saga, higher ingredient costs have been blamed for the suspected price hike.

Sad news for Freddo fans, but spare a thought for those fans in Australia, as the size of the bars there is just 12g following a weight reduction in 2015.
