Symrise investment in Bonumose opens opportunities to sugar reduction and taste balancing

A strategic partnership between Symrise and sugar alternative experts, Bonumose will see both companies work together on solutions for sugar reduction and taste balancing.

Applying particularly in the beverage and ice-cream categories, the move is designed to enhance Symrise’s flavour and taste balancing technologies with Bonumose’s innovative and economical tagatose and other alternative sweetening solutions.

“Health forms a growing focus category for Symrise. With the support of Bonumose’s enzymatic expertise, we can bring novel and disrupting ingredients to the marketplace together,” said Nick Russell, senior vice president – Business Incubation Group, Symrise.

Symrise now expects to accelerate growth in its sugar reduction initiatives in North America within the taste, nutrition & health segment.

“With the support of Bonumose’s enzymatic expertise, we can bring novel and disrupting ingredients to the marketplace together,” added Nick Russell, senior vice president – Business Incubation Group, Symrise.

Prior to the agreement, Bonumose opened a new R&D facility and manufacturing plant earlier this year. The facility allows for quality, consistent, and economic production of its growing portfolio of sugar alternatives.

Bonumose was founded in 2016 as a start-up based on its patented enzymatic technology, which allows for the sustainable bulk production of healthy ingredients from globally-abundant plant material.

Ed Rogers, Bonumose CEO and co-founder, said he is enthusiastic about the future and the growth that the investment and partnership with Symrise enables.

“This creates the opportunity to offer unique value to customers,” Rogers said. “The strength of Symrise as an augmented flavour house paired with Bonumose’s patented enzymatic technology will enable cutting edge solutions to sugar reduction.”
